Earlier this week, we met with members of the Centerport Yacht Club’s Let’s Take a Veteran Sailing Committee: SailAhead’s “founding father” Bob Slingo, longtime supporter and former CYC commodore Bob Ferri (a Vietnam War veteran and multiple-time Purple Heart recipient), and Doug Weinger, a dedicated CYC member and SailAhead participant.
Although this year’s event was cancelled due to a decision by the Yacht Club, our conversation was focused on looking forward—how we can organize next year’s event in a way that works for all parties involved. The commitment and enthusiasm in the room left us confident that this tradition will not only continue, but continue and grow.
A Legacy of Service and Sailing - The Centerport Yacht Club and SailAhead

The partnership between SailAhead and the Centerport Yacht Club is one of the cornerstones of our mission. Since the very beginning, the Let’s Take a Veteran Sailing event has brought together veterans, their families, and the local community for a day of healing on the water.
Through the support of CYC members and leadership, we have been able to take nearly 1,000 veterans sailing at this event alone—a milestone that speaks to the impact of compassion, teamwork, and shared purpose. Each year, the event has served as a reminder that sailing is more than sport; it’s a tool for healing, connection, and resilience.

Looking Ahead
The planning discussions are a positive step toward bringing this powerful event back next year, stronger than ever. With the dedication of the CYC committee and SailAhead’s growing network of veterans and volunteers, we are excited to build on this legacy and continue honoring those who have served.
We are deeply grateful to the Centerport Yacht Club for their past and ongoing support, and we look forward to setting sail together again soon.
