The C. Thomas Clagett, Jr. Memorial Clinic & Regatta held in Newport, RI is North America’s premier event for sailors with disabilities sailed in the three Paralympic class boats.
The Clagett mission is to provide sailors with disabilities the opportunity to improve their skills and reach personal goals through world-class coaching and competition.
The Clagett sailors have acknowledged how sail training, improving racing skills and enjoying the sport of sailing has significantly enhanced their quality of life. Skills acquired from sailing can be integrated into life. Things like teamwork and problem solving, which are both qualities needed to succeed in other areas of life.
Clagett/Oakcliff Match Race Regatta
This inaugural Clagett/Oakcliff event in 2016 increased the opportunities for sailors with disabilities to enhance their skills in an increasingly popular format of match racing which was conducted in Sonars. It was hosted by the WaterFront Center and organized by Oakcliff Sailing with support from the Clagett.
SailAhead's contribution to this regatta consists of providing equipment, our safety team, and our RHIB for the duration of the event. This is an opportunity for us to be useful by providing medical assistance when needed to the athletes on the water. During such a prestigious event, our veterans learn new safety and rescue skills as well as exposure to the latest adaptive sports equipment. This is also a great opportunity for SailAhead to meet world class sailors and enthusiastic volunteers.
This is an article by Andrea Watson on the event itself.
