Let's Take a Veteran Sailing with Tacoma Yacht Club

Let's Take a Veteran Sailing - Tacoma YCOverview

Six weeks before Washington became the 42nd state, a group of 26 sail and power boaters met under the leadership of Linus A. Post, the club's first Commodore, with the expressed desire of organizing a yachting club.

Today, Tacoma Yacht Club is well established and is where SailAhead has hosted its very first "Let's Take a Veteran Sailing-Tacoma" event on Saturday, July 15th, 2017.

Ryan Day

SailAhead's first annual Let's Take a Veteran Sailing at Tacoma Yacht Club, was in honor of SPC Ryan James Day, a Ranger from the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. Tacoma is where Ryan was based and where he ended his life at the young age of 21 on December 15th, 2014, after serving two tours in Afghanistan. Because of its strong support in the local Special Force/Special Operations/Military Community, the Tacoma Yacht Club was a logical choice to partner with in celebrating Ryan James Day and the Rangers from the 2nd Battalion. Thanks to the overwhelming support of the local skippers, our event was a success. Let's Take a Vetaran Sailing in Tacoma has become an annual event. We will continue to spread SailAhead's mission, spreading the word about PTSD so that we may continue healing and branching out to other Yacht Clubs and organizations that would like to do the same.

We are currently working on launching a SailAhead Sailing Team based in Tacoma to participate in the local races all year long.

Thank you to the Tacoma Yacht Club for hosting the event, providing boats, skippers, crew and volunteers, as well as the skippers from the Corinthian Yacht Club, Pointe du Hoc Foundation for your help, the The 75th Regiment for listening to us. A big thank you to all for believing in SailAhead's work! The Tacoma Yacht Club

"SailAhead, Tacoma Yacht Club & their Skipper's generosity is amazing. This event in honor of Ryan was a great success. SailAhead had the opportunity to bring their mission & values to a new community, to help active duty & veteran's heal through sailing. I learned one thing 'As one person or organization you cannot change the world, but you can change the world of one person' and that is SUCCESS!." Linda Day, Ryan's Mom
