Project Description:

August 22nd – “Let’s Take a Veteran Sailing” turned out to be a very impressive event for SailAhead and the largest event SailAhead has put together since its humble beginnings back in the 2013 winter frostbiting season.

We are so proud to be at the helm of this initiative!

Here are a few facts we’d like to share with you;
90 veterans and families, including a General, all from CT, NJ and NY; The youngest was a 24 year old USMC veteran who had just returned from Afghanistan and the oldest veteran was 94 years old - still young at heart – served in the Army in World War 2 and participated in the European theatres. In fact we had 4 veterans from WW2 participating in our event!

The Centerport Yacht Club (CYC) had generously accepted to host our event! This meant that, not only were we able to use the CYC facilities to host the event and welcome our veterans, but Centerport Yacht Club members had also volunteered their boats and time to join the SailAhead fleet. It did not end there, CYC also invited the entire fleet, nearly 300 people, to a BBQ at the end of the day!

In addition to their member volunteers, the Northport Yacht Club also helped by providing logistics for larger boats coming from other areas. Some Lloyd Harbor Yacht Club members also joined the SailAhead fleet.

Our fleet of 35 plus sailboats ranged in size from 30 feet to 60 feet long! The USMMA Sailing Foundation from Kings Point, Oakcliff Sailing Center and The WaterFront Center from Oyster Bay each provided boats, skippers and crew.

Two boats came from far, one from Mystic, CT and the other one from Nyack, NY! (One of these skippers is a veteran and the other is still on active duty!)

We were also honored by the presence of 20 USMMA cadets who had volunteered to assist us on the grounds. There were a lot of cadets on Saturday helping and honoring our veterans.

The American Legion riders from Greenlawn Post 1244 also honored us with their presence.

The Northport VA, which could not send their own staff due to scheduling conflicts, was also supportive of our initiative!

Thank you to the Centerport Yacht Club for hosting the event, American Legion Greenlawn Post 1244 and Hope For The Warriors for your precious help with the veterans, the American Legion Post's Riders for honoring us with your participation, Oakcliff Sailing Center, The WaterFront Center for providing boats, skippers and crew, USMMA Sailing Foundation for providing boats, skippers, crew and the participation of the USMMA cadets, the Northport Yacht Club and Lloyd Harbor Yacht Club for your participation and logistic support, David and Jack for your aerial participations (taking pictures from your helicopter) and all the many volunteers involved in helping make this a success, even people we had not met yet!

The work involved for this event was considerable, but we felt the power of what teamwork can achieve and we were already rewarded before the event started by the trust given to us.

A huge thank you to all for making this possible!

Mark your calendar for our next "Let's Take a Veteran sailing" to be held on Saturday, July 30th, 2016
