The volunteer work provided by The Waterfront Center in 2016 to our veterans was in excess of 500 hours of cumulated sailing and instruction time!
The Waterfront Center teaches people to become active stewards of the marine environment, and to promote community sailing and other environmentally friendly ways to enjoy the waters of Long Island.
Starting in August 2015 and continuing through the 2016 sailing season, The Waterfront Center provided weekly training sessions for our SailAhead veterans. This 33 hour US Sailing Basic Keelboat Certification, valued at $900 per participant, was provided free of charge to our veterans.
The on water training took place on 23 ft. Sonar keelboats, also generously provided by The Waterfront Center. Thanks to their work and support, we can grow our pool of veteran-skippers, which in turn will help us to help even more veterans!
In order for a veteran to acquire the Basic Keelboat Certification he/she needs to show his/her ability to sail a sailboat up to 27 feet in length in light to moderate winds and sea conditions in familiar waters without supervision. Successful candidates earn a US Sailing certification approved by the U.S. Coast Guard.
Thank You David, Alicia and the whole Waterfront Center team for your great support and work!
