The members of the Centerport Yacht Club since 2015 have shown strong support of SailAhead and local veterans. CYC is where SailAhead has been hosting "Let's Take a Veteran Sailing"; SailAhead's largest yearly event and the largest such event on Long Island! Thanks to the enthusiastic support and participation of CYC and its members, each year during one day SailAhead celebrates hundreds of local veterans, spreading PTSD and suicide awareness and honoring SailAhead Mates!
After the presentation of the Award by Greenlawn American Legion Post 1244 - Comander Dennis Madden to CYC Commodore Joseph J. Scarpulla in front of the whole CYC Board, Sean Duclay was able to explain why this year's "Let's Take a Veteran Sailing" event will be really special. First, we are honoring Army Ranger SPC Ryan James Day who ended his life at the age of 21 in December 2014 after 2 deployments in Afghanistan. Ryan's Family, who currently lives in Colorado, will join us and will be honored as well.
Second, as the Families of Our Mates are a special component of SaiLAhead, we are raising money to fly some Families to join us during this very special day. This is the first year we are doing this and are committed to do it every year now.
Third, over 50 sailboats will be participating taking over 200 veterans and their families with over 100 volunteers, most CYC members.
Fourth, since Ryan Day was an Army Ranger we are expecting the Ranger Community to be officially represented
Fifth, we'll be able to provide the same experience than the previous years to all participants but event better!
Thank You CYC commodore Joseph J. Scarpulla, CYC Board and all CYC members, skippers and volunteers. Thank you Greenlawn American Legion Post 1244 Comander Dennis Madden and all legionnaires for supporting SailAhead.
Without The Centerport Yacht Club and Greenlawn American Legion Post 1244, SailAhead would not be that strong.
